A taxi driver was assaulted and robbed as he dropped passengers off in Oldham.

It happened at about 4.45am on Saturday 22 December 2012 when a 45-year-old taxi driver picked up five men and a woman from Oldham town centre.

They asked to be taken to Higginshaw Estate, one of the passengers asked the driver to pull over and they all got out.

One of the men punched the victim in the face and stole his money bag containing about £200 in cash.

The offenders are described as five white men and a woman aged between 23 and 27, they were all between 5ft 8in and 6ft tall.

Detective Constable Andrew Swettenham from Oldham CID, said: “This man was simply doing his job when he picked up this fare, but found himself the victim of an unprovoked attack and robbery.

“These men stole his evening savings on one of the busiest nights of the year, he was not badly injured, but is very shaken by the incident.

“I would urge any witnesses who may have seen these people acting suspiciously, or running away from the scene to call us.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8982 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
