Arson attack on house while couple were still inside - Hyde

A couple were subjected to an arson attack in their own home in Hyde.

Shortly before 2.50am on Thursday 27 December 2012, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service called police to the address on Mill Lane, following reports of a fire.

The man inside, 22-years-old, had managed to get out, but his 20-year-old wife was left inside, trapped upstairs.

The fire service managed to bring the woman to safety, and made the area safe.

The man and woman were taken to hospital for treatment to smoke inhalation.

Joint enquiries with the fire service confirmed that the fire started at the front of the house.

Detective Constable Joe Harrop said: "Thankfully, neither of the victims were left seriously injured and the fire service did a fantastic job in bringing the woman to safety.

"However, we believe this fire was started deliberately and we are therefore treating this as an act of arson with the intention of putting people in danger.

"We therefore appeal to anyone who was in the area who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously.

"We understand there may be some concern in the area about what has happened, but we are investigating this thoroughly and believe this is an isolated incident."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 9276 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
