Officers have arrested a man in connection with an incident in a car park in Wigan.
Shortly after 12.30am on Saturday 1 December, a woman in her 20s was found in a distressed state by a member of the public who alerted police.
The woman was taken to hospital and an investigation was launched.
Officers established that sometime between 11.30pm on Friday 30 November and 12.30am on Saturday 1 December, the woman had been walking on Wallgate when she was followed into a car park by a man.
Last night (Saturday 1 December 2018), a 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in custody for questioning.
Detectives investigating the incident are continuing to appeal for information.
Detective Inspector Simon Edgington, of GMP’s Wigan Division, said: “We have a man in custody but our investigation is still in its early stages, and we are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened while we continue to support the victim.
“I know that an incident like this might cause a lot of concern but I would like to assure people that we are have a team of detectives dedicated to this investigation.
“I would like to thank everyone who has come forward to police with information so far, and I would encourage anyone else out there who might know something to please contact police as soon as you can."
