Division Commander

We are making huge strides in the fight against crime across Bury.

Over the last year, the overall number of burglaries, robberies, vehicle crime and anti-social behaviour have reduced by over 2,000 incidents. Alongside these encouraging figures, 84% of people in Bury think that the police are doing a good job and 8% think there is a high level of anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood.

Whilst these numbers are certainly encouraging, it is vital we continue to work in partnership with the council and the community to drive these crimes down even further. We can't do it on our own and we rely on information from the general public to bring offenders, who are determined to make your lives a misery for their own gains, to justice.

Bury Division are going through changes at the moment but I believe it will be of a benefit to the community and the way we police your area.

We have recently moved into a new police station and already I can see the benefits of such a move. Officers are able to spend more time on the streets during busy times thanks to our larger custody suite meaning their time isn't taken up transferring prisoners to other stations. It really is an impressive building and working in better conditions has made officers and staff even more determined to serve you and your family.

We are also dedicated to the new policing model that is being introduced to Bury. We are changing the way we deliver local policing with dedicated response officers and larger neighbourhood teams to ensure we are providing the best service possible to you. I admit, we don't always get things right, but we are working very hard to make sure we do get things right and the new model will help us do this.

As you will be aware, Greater Manchester Police, along with other police forces across the country, face challenging times with the budget cuts from the Government. However, we are determined to make sure that these cuts won't effect front-line policing and the methods in which we serve you. If you want to speak to your local officer about how your neighbourhood is policed, you can attend many PACT meetings and surgeries that take place on a monthly basis across the town. This is an ideal way to raise any concerns you may have and discuss the priorities you feel we should be focusing on.

The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally.

62.6% of people surveyed in Bury agree that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area.

This is the result of a face to face survey that was conducted in this area which asked local people whether they agree that:

“The police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”.

Care should be taken in making comparisons in local indicators that have used different survey techniques.

The survey is based on a random survey of people in the local area. The use of a random sample aims to ensure the results are statistically representative of the local population. Compared to other estimates of how the population is made up, the sample for this survey may under represent some subgroups.

Greater Manchester Police has conducted Neighbourhood Surveys with local residents since April 2008. Following national guidance we have now moved to a face to face survey which was introduced in October 2009 and involves a rolling programme of interviews carried out between PCSOs and local residents. The survey focuses on:
  • Confidence in policing
  • Perceptions of anti-social behaviour
  • Neighbourhood Policing
  • Local priorities
The results are used to improve the service provided by the police and our partners.

The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally. Performance against this target is measured at a force level through the British Crime Survey but local progress is monitored through our Neighbourhood Surveys.

Local people were asked whether they agree that, “the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”. This is how people responded in Bury during October 2009 to March 2010:
  • 16.2% said they strongly agree
  • 46.4% said they tend to agree
  • 16.1% neither agreed or disagreed
  • 6.2% said they tend to disagree
  • 2.2% said they strongly disagree
  • 12.9% said they don’t know
