Football legend launches Altrincham Safe4Summer campaig

Football legend Tony Book will be joining young people in a five-a-side football match as part of a summer antisocial behaviour campaign in Altrincham.

Young people across Altrincham are being challenged to beat the boredom and help further reduce antisocial behaviour by taking part in the latest Safe4Summer campaign.

Altrincham Neighbourhood Policing Team has worked with a range of sporting partner agencies to provide free activities for 12-19 year olds throughout the summer holidays.

Activities including: golf, ice skating, snooker and Zumba are available, and community youth coaches from Manchester City Football Club will be assisting five-a-side football on certain dates throughout the holiday period.
Tony Book, ex player and manager at Manchester City Football Club and will be attending the first five-a-side football session at Blessed Thomas High School, Altrincham on Tuesday 31 July at 3pm.

Safe4summer is a Greater Manchester wide partnership-based approach aimed at keeping people of all ages safe and addressing community concerns about youth related crime and anti-social behaviour during the summer months.

The campaign has been designed to offer young people the opportunity to experience a whole host of fun and exciting activities in their local areas. During the long summer break, there are occasions when something that may appear to be a bit of harmless fun, could be seen differently by others and could carry quite serious consequences if it gets out of hand. Safe4summer aims to signpost people of all ages to interests and activities to enjoy within their local area; it also offers advice about personal safety and promotes social responsibility messages.
Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPT) and partners will be targeting areas the public have highlighted as being hotspots but GMP hope the campaign will encourage youths to take advantage of the activities on offer on its website,

By logging onto the website, young people can choose from a variety of activities designed to keep them entertained and off the streets during the summer holiday period.

Safe4Summer provides a programme of events to ensure young people have safe and enjoyable summer holidays, reduce antisocial behaviour and the fear of crime while increasing residents’ confidence that their concerns are being taken seriously and acted upon.

Sergeant John Cave from the Altrincham Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Throughout the holiday period, we will be supporting these activities and encouraging young people we come across during our patrols to attend. We intend to nip antisocial behaviour in the bud and proactively ensure that the summer can be as safe as possible for everybody. We cannot do this alone and will be working closely with partner agencies to tackle concerns.

“It is important that parents take responsibility and know where their children are, what they are doing and what time they will be home.
