Officers from Greater Manchester Police launched an initiative to raise awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM).
The week-long operation which started on Monday 14 July was supported by Manchester Airport and the UK Border Force. It saw specialist officers patrol check-in desks at the airport to spot any families that might have been taking their children to home countries to take part in the illegal act.
During the week, 17 families were spoken to by police who also provided them with information leaflets about FGM and its dangers.
Detective Chief Superintendent Vanessa Jardine from Greater Manchester Police, said: “We want this week of action to raise awareness within communities that are affected. FGM is a crime and GMP along with our partners operates a zero tolerance approach to it.
