Specials: Employer Supported Policing

An Employer Supported Policing (ESP) scheme is an initiative aimed at helping employers support their staff to become special constables. The ESP model has 4 options designed to encourage businesses and organisations, both large and small, to engage with the police to support the Special Constabulary.

Option 1

  • Active and ongoing support of ESP concept by promoting the recruitment of special constables.

Option 2

  • Release staff for agreed training and in times of significant emergency.
  • Actively encourage staff to be special constables.
  • Allow us of facilities where appropriate.

Option 3

  • 50% time off allowed for Special Constabulary Training.
  • Minimum of 4 hours per month paid time off for Special Constabulary duties.
  • Published organisational policy or guidelines supporting Special Constabulary duties and training.
  • Release staff for agreed training and in times of significant emergency.
  • Actively encourage staff to be Special Constables.
  • Allow us of facilities where appropriate.

Option 4

  • Full-time off allowed/credited for Special Constabulary training.
  • Minimum of 8 hours per month paid time off for Special Constabulary duties.

Greater Manchester Police are working in partnership with a number of employers and currently have some successful schemes operating including a Bus Watch initiative. Work continues to develop links with employers and expand ESP across the Force.
