Dicing with Death: Switch off your mobile

Driver distraction is a significant contributory factor to road collisions.

It is a deliberate action to answer a mobile phone, don't do it, it is a major distraction when driving.

Watch our video message on using a mobile phone when driving, by Inspector Martin O'Connor from the Roads Policing Unit.

Greater Manchester Police deploys 3 Smartcars across the region to film motorists who are using a hand held mobile phone while driving. The camera technology is very effective, and the quality of evidence is excellent. Between 500-700 offences are recorded every day.

Greater Manchester Police enforced over 6,000 mobile phone offences in 2011, more than 18 each day of the year.

See the Direct Gov website for details of mobile phones and driving.

The Think! website also provides advice and guidance on using a mobile phone when driving.  It is difficult to do two things at once - take the Driving Challenge game.

You can help keep the roads safer by providing information about those driving whilst disqualified or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, by calling us directly on 101 the single non-emergency number or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
