GMP Band

The original Police Band was formed in Salford after the funeral of a police officer in 1877. Following the amalgamation with the City Of Manchester Police in 1968, and the subsequent creation of Greater Manchester Police in 1974, the band has grown into an acclaimed 40 strong Symphonic Wind Band, coupled with an outstanding Marching Band who undertake many high profile parades and public ceremonies.

In 2003 our highly successful Big Band was formed playing music made famous by many of the great swing bands including Glenn Miller and Count Basie. We have several vocalists including, George Pinnington, Chief Inspector Clara Williams, Andrew Fenton, and our youngest volunteer, Rae Atkin. Complimented by our backing singers, they are able to bring a great variety to our performances as they feature music from 1940’s to 1980’s including Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and Gloria Gaynor to Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, and Michael Buble.

We also have a number of smaller groups including a five piece Jazz Ensemble, a Saxophone Quartet, a Dixieland Jazz Quintet, and a team of Ceremonial Fanfare Trumpeters. All these groups are in great demand and play regularly at many GMP events, formal civic ceremonies, both private and corporate functions, and regularly support many community and charity engagements.

On the creation of Greater Manchester Police in 1974 the band consisted of 35 full time police officers who undertook engagements all over the country on behalf of the force. Now we have more than 60 volunteers including a small number of serving and retired police officers, GMP support staff, professional musicians, teachers, and members of the wider community. Our volunteers all give up many thousands of hours of their time annually, to represent the force.

The band is managed by Mr Barry Frost, a retired police officer and band member for some 20 years. Barry plays the Soprano, Alto, and Tenor saxophones within the Symphonic Band, Big Band, and our smaller groups.

All aspects of our band are also available for hire for any public, private, charity or community events, subject to our existing commitments, and of course the availability of our volunteers.

We aim to make a difference in our community through music. To date the charity and community events supported by the band have helped generate over three quarters of a million pounds, benefiting a considerable number of charities and community fund raising initiatives.
