There are many benefits from being able to buy things online or to contact with people using social networks. The technology has allowed us to safe time by being able to do business at the touch of a button. But using the Internet and social networks has meant that criminals are looking for ways of gathering your personal information for identity theft, to defraud or carry out other illegal activities.

Remember:

  • Make sure your computer, smartphone or tablet device has up-to-date anti-virus software
  • Never circulate personal information or details through social networks as you never know who may be access it
  • Avoid clicking on links or answering emails or posts that don’t seem right as they may contain viruses or be linked to scams
  • If you are offered things that appear to be too good to be true then they probably are
  • Put a lock or PIN on your smartphone so that other people can’t access your data
  • Use ‘find my phone’ apps that can track your phone if it goes missing or is stolen
  • If you have an Apple phone, activate "Find my iPhone" to make sure you can still track your phone if it is lost or stolen
