/ Profile: Special Constable Tracy

Why did you join the GMP Special Constabulary?

I joined the Special Constabulary to get an insight into joining the Police Force due to having serving family members in GMP and Lancashire Constabulary. I also wanted to help others; after being a repeat victim of crime myself I wanted to make a difference by helping to give support to other victims. I have now decided to become a ‘career’ (long term) Special as I enjoy my job in the GMP Crime Recording Unit assisting Police Officers and dealing with members of the public - as well as dealing with victims and offenders on the front line.

What are the best bits about being a Special?

I enjoy the role of a Special because it's so varied. I am a great believer in you get out of it what you put in - I enjoy getting involved in a the many aspects of policing . I also enjoy being a supervisor and seeing the progression of new recruits as many things have changed within the Special Constabulary since I joined nearly 6 years ago.

How do you balance your work/social life with your responsibilities of being a Special?

I am a GMP employee therefore I am entitled to 8 hours per month Employee Supported Policing leave. I mainly commit to my Specials work on rest days and evenings when and where I can but also undertake administrative tasks such as organising events and resources from home .

Would you recommend this volunteering opportunity to others?

This has to be one of the best - if not the best - volunteering opportunity you could be given and it is a privilege to be able to do this role.
