Explosive cash machine robbery in Lowton

Police are appealing for information after a cash machine was robbed in Lowton.

Shortly before 4.15am on Thursday 7 September 2017, police were called to reports of a stolen cash machine at a supermarket on Church Lane.

Thieves approached the cash machine by the supermarket and set off an explosion, which gave them access to the cash inside.

The offenders then removed all the cash from the machine and made off in a white car down Church Lane.

Detective Constable Chris Waddicar of GMP’s Wigan Borough, said: “These men must have struck terror in the local community by setting off an explosion in the early hours of the morning.

“They have not only stolen a large amount of money, they have caused a significant amount of damage and disrupted this shop’s day-to-day running.

“People in the area must have heard the noise as the offenders gained entry to the cash machine.

“I’m asking for anyone who saw people acting suspiciously, or a white car in the area at the time, to get in touch.”
