Crime levels in Oldham reduced by more than 13 per cent over the past three months, according to new figures from Greater Manchester Police.

Between 1 April to 30 June 2010 there have been 742 fewer victims of criminals across Oldham compared to the same period the previous year.

The statistics also reveal that the number of incidents of burglary has gone down by 20.6 per cent and the number of robberies has gone down by 33.9 per cent. Vehicle crime is also down by 30.6 per cent – that’s 211 fewer victims.

There has also been a reduction in the amount of anti-social behaviour, with 495 fewer incidents April to June 2010, compared to the same period last year.

Superintendent Chris Sykes, Head of Oldham Council’s Community Safety Services, said: “These figures reflect the commitment and hard work officers and staff put in to serving the people of our community who fall victim to criminals.

Councillor Rod Blyth, Oldham Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Protection, said: “I’m particularly pleased to see in these figures that incidents of anti-social behaviour are coming down. This is one of the main issues residents tell us affects their quality of life, whether it be drinking on the streets or graffiti. In response the police, the council and our partners have made tackling anti-social behaviour a priority, and it’s clearly working.”

A number of initiatives and operations have taken place over the past few months, which have helped contribute to the reductions. They include Operation Gateway, which involved officers from the Challenge and Support Team boarding popular public transport routes in Lees, Greenfield and Uppermill and along Ashton Road to tackle anti-social behaviour. More than 1,000 passengers were spoken to about the consequences of their behaviour and one arrest was made. Officers also seized 39 litres of alcohol and 48 cans of lager from underage teenagers.

Neighbourhood officers also continue to work closely with Community Safety Services, including Crime Reduction Advisors and Anti-Social Behaviour Officers, to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Superintendent Chris Sykes said: “We could not do the job that we do without the assistance of local residents so I’d like to thank you for your support. By following crime prevention advice and reporting suspicious incidents you have helped us in our fight against crime and I would urge you to continue to do this so that we can make the streets even safer to live on.”
