Residents have their say on community cash

“It’s Up 2 U” is the message to residents living in Smallshaw, Hurst and St Michael’s in Ashton-under-Lyne as they are being given the opportunity to decide how £10,000 is spent in their community.

Residents can apply for funds of up to £1,000 to support non-profit organisations, voluntary groups and community safety projects to help reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.

Applicants will then be able to make a three-minute pitch to the public who will vote for the applications they think are most deserving.

The vote will take place at New Charter Academy, Greenhurst Road Campus, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL6 9DX on Saturday 21 August 2010. The afternoon event starts at 1pm with bids followed by the public vote and results announced before the day ends at 4.30pm.

Refreshments will be available and there will be the opportunity to meet neighbourhood police officers and council and local housing authority representatives to discuss any community issues.

Application forms are available from Ashton Police Station, Broadoak Community Centre Police Post, Hurst Community Centre, Rosehill Children’s Centre, New Charter Academy, Hazel Hurst New Charter Neighbourhood Centre, Hurst Library, Broadoak Post Office and to download from www.gmp.police.uk/ neighbourhoodpolicing on the right hand side of this page.

Assistance with completing the forms can be obtained by contacting the following people: Caroline Wilkinson 0161 342 3609 and Sangita Patel 0161 342 3609 at Tameside Council, Melanie Johnson 0161 331 2000 at New Charter, Arati Patel-Mistry 0161 330 4965 at New Charter Academy and Tameside Police Enquiry Counter Officer Hayley McCaffer 0161 856 9497/8.

Bids for the money must be completed and returned to Ashton Police Station, North Neighbourhood Office, Manchester Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL7 0BQ by Monday 2 August 2010.

Inspector Tony Alogba said: “Tackling anti-social behaviour is a priority for the police in Tameside and by working with residents we can address these issues as well as support projects that benefit the community.

“Part of the funding provided by the police has been recovered from offenders who have engaged in illegal activities including drug dealing. Residents have helped bring these criminals to justice so it is satisfying to be able to offer the public the opportunity to decide how this money will be spent.

“I would like to invite all the residents of Smallshaw, Hurst and St Michael’s to attend the event and have their say.”

Cllr Alan Whitehead, Chair of the Smallshaw Hurst Partnership said: “Working with GMP and New Charter we have been able to make a good impact on levels of anti-social behaviour in our area, but there is still a way to go and this initiative gives an opportunity to local groups to come up with their own ideas, that local residents can then vote on at the event on 21 August.”
Tony Powell, Executive Director, New Charter Homes said: “We are supporting this, as it is an excellent opportunity for our communities to put forward their ideas to introduce initiatives which they are really committed to, in order to combat anti-social behaviour.”

Greater Manchester Police, New Charter Housing Trust Group and Smallshaw, Hurst Business Partnership have provided funding for the event.
