Greater Manchester Police has been shortlisted for two awards in The Guardian’s Public Service Awards 2017 this week, following its efforts to recruit a more diverse workforce and the Force’s development of mobile technology to support frontline policing in the running for national recognition.
Announced recently, The Guardian’s Public Service Awards has eight categories and a final “Servant of the Year” award. Categories include care, finance, health & wellbeing and housing.
GMP has been shortlisted in the Recruitment & HR and the Digital categories, becoming the only police force shortlisted and the organisation shortlisted twice.
The positive action recruitment team is up for the first thanks to their work to attract officers and staff from a range of backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities, ensuring the Force reflects the communities of Greater Manchester.
The Force’s mobile team is hoping to take home the win in the Digital category, having introduced smart phones, tablets and a whole new way of working just last year. Since then, over 85 per cent of the Force’s paperwork has been done remotely, from the communities that they serve. This means more time out on the streets and less time in stations.
Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: “Both of these teams have made a fantastic contribution to the Force and our efforts to improve the way that we work. Our positive recruitment team have helped us continue to better reflect the communities that we serve and the mobile team have created an ethos of working that sees officers on the ground, with the people of Greater Manchester, more and more every single day.
“To simply be nominated in these national awards, particularly alongside other impressive organisations, is an achievement.”
The two teams will find out if they are their category’s best in the country at a glittering awards evening on the 28th November alongside other nominees including local authorities, charities and housing associations.
