/ Profile: Special Constable Gemma

Why did you join the GMP Special Constabulary?

I like to give my time back to my community, and have previously volunteered with council run youth groups. In 2014 I decided to volunteer as a Special Constable which would enable me to work with GMP and build trust and relationships with communities.

What are the best bits about being a Special?

The best part of being a Special is working with other Specials and regular officers on a variety of different events, such as being able to support the Chinese New Year or helping with the Night Time Economy in the city centre. Being a Special has also helped with my day job as a HR Advisor as it has allowed me to become more confident and has given me the ability to give advice effectively to individuals by applying the knowledge I have gained.

How do you balance your work/social life with your responsibilities of being a Special?

I have a great work life balance as I am able to book my own duties that fit around my job in the day and my social life. I work as a Police staff member during the day and it is much easier than I first thought to fit in a duty as I am able to use the employer supported additional paid leave once a month to work a duty. This allows me to undertake a variety of different shifts and ensures I complete at least a minimum of 16 hours duty a month.

What was the reaction of your friends and family when you decided to undertake volunteering for the Police?

My family and close friends were extremely supportive with my choice to join the Special Constabulary; they took this as an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the role of the Police and how we are here to support the community and not just respond to incidents.

Would you recommend this volunteering opportunity to others?

Yes, I would recommend volunteering as a Special Constable with Greater Manchester Police to anyone who is considering volunteering. No two duties are ever the same; there is a lot of variety and challenges when volunteering that makes it very interesting and enjoyable.
