Profile: Police Support Volunteer Rita

Why did you join GMP as a Police Support Volunteer?

I joined in 2010 because I saw an article in a paper which stated volunteers would be a huge help to GMP. I applied straight away, and commenced volunteering in May of that year.

What are the best bits about being a Police Support Volunteer?

The wonderful camaraderie we have at Cheadle Heath Integrated Neighbourhood Policing Team. Also I have the fantastic experience of being nominated for a “Proud of Stockport” (Special Police Category) Award early on this year. The Nomination said I was “Infectiously enthusiastic”. I like that.

What activities do you get involved in as a Police Support Volunteer?

All sorts… I have shorthand and touch-type skills so I do a lot of computer work including taking minutes at community meetings which I type up. I also go out with officers on the “Safer Plate initiatives” (changing screws on car registration plates to make them safer) . I have also spoken to victims of crime and helped circulated and complete surveys. The job is ever-changing; as new tasks come up, I tackle them. Also I make myself useful to the Partnership Team when they have events.

What was the reaction of your friends and family when you decided to undertake volunteering for the police?

They were not too surprised. I have always been a volunteer in some capacity or other, after leaving my challenging job with an Airline. Before joining the Police, I worked for the Christie Hospital as a Therapeutic Carer. My grandsons think my job with the police is cool.

Would you recommend this volunteering opportunity to others?

The answer is a big YES. If you are willing to learn new skills, I would recommend this volunteering
experience…it’s good to know we have someone to turn to and to help us out if needed. Also, I have made lovely new friends. So…. GO FOR IT!!! We have a great Partnership Team who support all the volunteers. If we have any queries about the role, it's good to know we have someone to turn to and to help us out if needed. They are always there at the end of a phone, or responding to emails.
