A man staying at a hostel who attacked a fellow guest with a meat cleaver and chased him onto the street has been jailed.

David Hutchings (born 22/4/1987) of no fixed address pleaded guilty to Section 18 Assault (causing grievous bodily harm with intent).

On Friday 27 July 2012, at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, Hutchings was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection (IPP) and ordered to serve a minimum of three years.

In the early hours of Thursday 26 April 2012, Hutchings and the victim, a 34-year-old man, were making food in the kitchen and got into an argument.

The victim slapped Hutchings across the head. Hutchings then left and came back into the kitchen a short time later with a 10-inch meat cleaver that he used to hit the victim over the head, drawing blood.

Hutchings then chased the victim out of the hostel and onto Wilmslow Road, before returning to his room.

The victim suffered a hairline fracture and serious wound to the side of his face.

Detective Constable Rachel Wood said: “The victim was not willing to support a police investigation or prosecution, but we have been able to reach this outcome because of the CCTV footage that captured the incident.

“The strength of this evidence alone was enough to bring about a conviction.

“This was a serious assault that we were duty-bound to investigate.”
