A man armed with a hammer has stolen money and cigarettes from a shop in Bury.

At around 12pm on Thursday 21 June 2012, a man wearing a balaclava walked into the off licence on Bury Old Road.

Fearing for their safety, a staff member ran to the back of the shop while the offender climbed over the counter and stole the till.

He then took a large quantity of cigarettes before leaving.

No one was injured.

The man is described as being 6ft tall, was wearing dark clothes and a black balaclava.

Detective Constable Martin Brown from Bury CID said: “The offender did not speak and no threats were made but the sight of this man walking into the shop armed with a hammer, terrified the staff member.

“The man took the till from the shop and the money inside however, the till is still unaccounted for and may have been discarded somewhere close by.

“This robbery took place in broad daylight and we believe someone may have witnessed what happened. If you did see something or have any information that could lead to the identification of the offender, I would ask you to contact police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 8248 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
