Update: The neighbourhood team continues to provide high visibility and plain-clothes patrols of the area to disrupt these activities.

When: Between 8am until 8pm

Update: Neighbourhood beat officers and Police community support officers work hard to tackle this issue, conducting regular early morning rough sleepers sweeps, patrolling begging hotspots around cash machines and dealing with any disruptive or aggressive beggars in the way of court summons.

Update: General advice to public is to support official charities that work hard to tackle homelessness rather than giving money to people on the street.

When: Between 8am until 8pm

Update: Organisations such as the Booth Centre which is based in the city centre help people move off the streets, build up their skills and deal with problems such as substance abuse. The centre say money given to beggars is used to fund drug and alcohol habits, stopping them breaking free from addiction and moving on with their lives.

Update: In May 2013,Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police were putting up posters across the city centre with the message ‘don’t fund the habit, fund the charities’ as part of a campaign backed by organisations such as the Booth Centre. Some posters can still be seen around the City.
