The latest Neighbourhood Survey has thrown up some very pleasing results.

According to the survey, the number of respondents who think that police are doing a good job in Bury has gone up from 35 per cent on the first quarter of 2008 to 42 per cent in the same period of 2009.

Also, the number who have high perception of anti-social behaviour in their areas has gone down from 27 per cent in 2008 to 25 per cent in 2008 and similarly, the number of respondents who believe the police are dealing with anti-social behaviour has gone up from 24 per cent in 2008 to 31 per cent in 2009.

I believe this reflects the impact that the proactive work we are doing to tackle anti-social behaviour is having on the quality of life of residents in Bury.

This includes confiscating alcohol from under-age drinkers and seizing off-road motorbikes that are being ridden illegally in public places.

Our new Divisional Headquarters officially opened it’s doors in June 2010 and is situated on Dunster Road, only 150 yards away from the old Headquarters in the town centre.

This modern policing facility has provided us with many advantages - our new custody suite is twice as big as our old one which means that during busy times officers will be able to stay on patrol in Bury and won’t need to transfer prisoners to other stations. Other benefits include a rainwater recovery system for water to wash police vehicles and flush toilets.

We will now see the new HQ begin to have a positive impact positive on the community and local residents will feel the benefit of this through the delivery of an even better police service.

The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally.

62.6% of people surveyed in Bury agree that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area.

This is the result of a face to face survey that was conducted in this area which asked local people whether they agree that:

“The police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”.

Care should be taken in making comparisons in local indicators that have used different survey techniques.

The survey is based on a random survey of people in the local area. The use of a random sample aims to ensure the results are statistically representative of the local population. Compared to other estimates of how the population is made up, the sample for this survey may under represent some subgroups.

Greater Manchester Police has conducted Neighbourhood Surveys with local residents since April 2008. Following national guidance we have now moved to a face to face survey which was introduced in October 2009 and involves a rolling programme of interviews carried out between PCSOs and local residents. The survey focuses on:
  • Confidence in policing
  • Perceptions of anti-social behaviour
  • Neighbourhood Policing
  • Local priorities
The results are used to improve the service provided by the police and our partners.

The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally. Performance against this target is measured at a force level through the British Crime Survey but local progress is monitored through our Neighbourhood Surveys.

Local people were asked whether they agree that, “the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”. This is how people responded in Bury during October 2009 to March 2010:
  • 16.2% said they strongly agree
  • 46.4% said they tend to agree
  • 16.1% neither agreed or disagreed
  • 6.2% said they tend to disagree
  • 2.2% said they strongly disagree
  • 12.9% said they don’t know
