I am extremely proud to report that over the past year recorded crime in Oldham has dropped by 17 per cent. That’s just over 3,500 fewer victims of crime. Within this figure vehicle crime is down by over 25 per cent and burglary by nearly 20 per cent. We do not intend to rest on this success and we will continue to work hard to make it more difficult for criminals to operate in Oldham.
Of course, the reality of life is that relatively few people are victims or crime, and even less are victims of more serious crime. As I travel around the Borough, what people tell me concerns them most is anti-social behaviour. Well, your Neighbourhood Policing Teams are working hard with Oldham Council and other partners to tackle anti-social behaviour in all its forms and over the last year calls about anti-social behaviour have reduced by seven per cent.
I am committed to working with all the different communities of Oldham to tackle the issues that matter most to you. Please take the time to come to one of the many community meetings organised by your local Neighbourhood Policing Teams and tell us what you would like us to make a priority. If you can’t make it, contact your team direct using the contact details on this website.
Finally, if you have information about someone committing crime or anti-social behaviour in your area, please tell us about it. We can’t solve problems if we don’t know about them in the first place. You can report crime on 0161 872 5050 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Thank you for your continued support.
Tim Forber
Chief Superintendent
Oldham Divisional Commander
62.5% of people surveyed in Oldham agree that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area.
This is the result of a face to face survey that was conducted in this area which asked local people whether they agree that:
“The police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”.
Care should be taken in making comparisons in local indicators that have used different survey techniques.
The survey is based on a random survey of people in the local area. The use of a random sample aims to ensure the results are statistically representative of the local population. Compared to other estimates of how the population is made up, the sample for this survey may under represent some subgroups.
Greater Manchester Police has conducted Neighbourhood Surveys with local residents since April 2008. Following national guidance we have now moved to a face to face survey which was introduced in October 2009 and involves a rolling programme of interviews carried out between PCSOs and local residents. The survey focuses on:
- Confidence in policing
- Perceptions of anti-social behaviour
- Neighbourhood Policing
- Local priorities
The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally. Performance against this target is measured at a force level through the British Crime Survey but local progress is monitored through our Neighbourhood Surveys.
Local people were asked whether they agree that, “the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”. This is how people responded in Oldham during October 2009 to March 2010:
- 16.3% said they strongly agree
- 46.2% said they tend to agree
- 15.0% neither agreed or disagreed
- 7.1% said they tend to disagree
- 3.0% said they strongly disagree
- 12.5% said they don’t know
