Division Commander

There are a number of challenges for our officers and teams across the Division and this includes the town centres of Rochdale, Heywood, Middleton and the Pennine.

Burglary, anti-social behaviour, violence and vehicle crime remain priorities and we need your continued support to help put an end to this crime.

Please see your Neighbourhood Policing Team's pages for updates on how we are addressing these.

Our job would not be possible without your support our partners such as the fire service, local authority, Primary Care Trust and housing associations as well as our volunteers in the heart of the community so thank you.

As a Force and a Division we are aiming to reconnect with people to deliver the policing expected and desired. This aim is to keep you updated on the policing activity in your community. By looking on your Neighbourhood Policing Team’s page you will be able to access your areas top priorities, these are the issues that are concerning you the most. As a Division we aim to address these concerns and resolve as best we can.

We will be asking for your input to influence the policing of your neighbourhoods to ensure that our service is focused on the needs of local communities, addressing the issues that matter most to you.

Ways you can get involved:

  • Attending monthly Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meetings
  • Getting involved in voluntary groups i.e. Home Watch
  • Attending engagement and community events by police
  • Responding to surveys
  • Contacting the teams direct through the website

Police in Rochdale are ready to listen to your concerns and issues affecting your lives to make the area a safer place to live and work in.

Can I also ask that you listen to our police show on Crescent Radio. Every fortnight a member of the team will be available to answer your calls and talk about issues affecting your community.

John O'Hare
Chief Superintendent
Rochdale Divisional Commander

The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally.

60.0% of people surveyed in Rochdale agree that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area.

This is the result of a face to face survey that was conducted in this area which asked local people whether they agree that:

“The police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”.

Care should be taken in making comparisons in local indicators that have used different survey techniques.

The survey is based on a random survey of people in the local area. The use of a random sample aims to ensure the results are statistically representative of the local population. Compared to other estimates of how the population is made up, the sample for this survey may under represent some subgroups.

Greater Manchester Police has conducted Neighbourhood Surveys with local residents since April 2008. Following national guidance we have now moved to a face to face survey which was introduced in October 2009 and involves a rolling programme of interviews carried out between PCSOs and local residents. The survey focuses on:
  • Confidence in policing
  • Perceptions of anti-social behaviour
  • Neighbourhood Policing
  • Local priorities

The results are used to improve the service provided by the police and our partners.

The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally. Performance against this target is measured at a force level through the British Crime Survey but local progress is monitored through our Neighbourhood Surveys.

Local people were asked whether they agree that, “the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”. This is how people responded in Rochdale during October 2009 to March 2010:
  • 17.5% said they strongly agree
  • 42.5% said they tend to agree
  • 18.5% neither agreed or disagreed
  • 6.1% said they tend to disagree
  • 2.5% said they strongly disagree
  • 12.8% said they don’t know
