We are taking part in a campaign urging people to make the link between buying stolen goods and fuelling further crime, drug abuse and misery in their community.

That bargain watch, sat nav or mobile phone you may be offered in the pub, betting shop or at your door has probably been taken through a local burglary, car crime or robbery.

In some cases criminals may have used or threatened violence to get it. In every case it leaves a victim who has not only lost valuables but is left distressed and possibly emotionally scarred. Stolen items may have sentimental value and therefore be sorely missed and irreplaceable.

By refusing to buy goods you suspect may have been stolen, you can help stem further crime, deprive drug users of cash and thus force them into rehabilitation.

Criminals use money made from dealing drugs to live extravagant lifestyles and fund other serious crimes such as armed robberies, protection rackets and prostitution.

The World Cup has seen the area buzzing with excitement and hopefully your team has had a successful campaign.

During major tournaments like this, competitive tension, and increased alcohol consumption, can provoke abuse and violence at home. We want to urge victims, their friends and families not to wait, but to seek help and advice immediately before the abuse escalates.

For more information about those services available to help stop domestic abuse, you can visit: www.endthefear.co.uk. Those responsible can also get help to stop by contacting the Respect Phoneline on 0845 122 8609.

Summer is officially here and hopefully the weather will be glorious. However, with an increase in temperature and the likelihood of doors and windows being left open, there will be an increase in burglars looking to steal your property.

Please make sure your doors and windows are locked at all times, even if you are staying in and especially before you go to bed. Opportunist thieves are always on the lookout for an easy target and won’t think twice about entering your home. If you are going out, set a light or radio on a timer to give the impression someone is in.

If you have a neighbourhood policing issue in Salford, please contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally.

64.0% of people surveyed in Salford agree that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area.

This is the result of a face to face survey that was conducted in this area which asked local people whether they agree that:

“The police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”.

Care should be taken in making comparisons in local indicators that have used different survey techniques.

The survey is based on a random survey of people in the local area. The use of a random sample aims to ensure the results are statistically representative of the local population. Compared to other estimates of how the population is made up, the sample for this survey may under represent some subgroups.

Greater Manchester Police has conducted Neighbourhood Surveys with local residents since April 2008. Following national guidance we have now moved to a face to face survey which was introduced in October 2009 and involves a rolling programme of interviews carried out between PCSOs and local residents. The survey focuses on:
  • Confidence in policing
  • Perceptions of anti-social behaviour
  • Neighbourhood Policing
  • Local priorities
The results are used to improve the service provided by the police and our partners.

The Government has set all police forces a target to raise public confidence that the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter locally. Performance against this target is measured at a force level through the British Crime Survey but local progress is monitored through our Neighbourhood Surveys.

Local people were asked whether they agree that, “the police and local council are dealing with the anti-social behaviour and crime issues that matter in this area”. This is how people responded in Salford during October 2009 to March 2010:
  • 14.8% said they strongly agree
  • 49.2% said they tend to agree
  • 17.0% neither agreed or disagreed
  • 7.4% said they tend to disagree
  • 3.0% said they strongly disagree
  • 8.6% said they don’t know
