I am the new Chief Superintendent taking over as Divisional Commander for the Stockport Division.
Since arriving in Stockport, I have been out on the streets to get a better understanding of how I can build on Rebekah Sutcliffe’s successes and make Stockport an even safer, more peaceful place to live, work and visit.
You are rightfully very proud of your area and this is reflected in the information my officers are being given to tackle the issues you are raising. It is very positive to see such great community spirit and I’d like to thank you for your support.
I will be using my 18 years policing experience to work with officers and get in the faces of offenders. It won’t be easy, but with support from you and the commitment and experience of my officers, we will overcome all the challenges that lie ahead in the future.
You can support me immediately by helping to reduce vehicle crime. Criminals are having rich pickings as far too many items are being left on display in cars. Remove your valuables, lock your vehicle and help prevent crime.
I will update you with some hard hitting arrests and positive results in the near future. Once again, thank you.
Chief Superintendent Chris Sykes
Greater Manchester Police is dedicated to improving the confidence of Greater Manchester residents in the police. As a result, Neighbourhood Surveys have been conducted with local residents since April 2008. We have now moved to a face to face survey which was introduced in October 2009 and involves a rolling programme of interviews carried out between PCSOs and local residents. The survey focuses on:
• Confidence in policing
• Confidence in partnership working
• Perceptions of anti social behaviour
• Neighbourhood policing
• Local priorities
The survey is based on a random survey of people in the local area. The use of a random sample aims to ensure the results are statistically representative of the local population. The results are used to improve the service provided by the police and our partners and are updated quarterly. Care should be taken in making comparisons in local indicators that have used different survey techniques.
Greater Manchester Police has established local targets for the areas of public confidence, perception of anti social behaviour and partnership working. Performance against these targets is measured at a force level through the British Crime Survey but local progress is monitored through our Neighbourhood Surveys.
This is how residents responded during January 2011 – December 2011.
Greater Manchester residents were asked about their perception of anti social behaviour in their local area:
2.6% of residents perceive a high level of anti-social behaviour. There has been a significant improvement of 3.7% points compared to the same period last year.
6.2% of residents perceive drug use/dealing to be a very or fairly big problem. There has been a significant improvement of 8.9% points compared to the same period last year.
Greater Manchester residents were asked about public confidence:
88.2% of residents believe that the police are doing an excellent or good job. There has been a significant improvement of 10.2% points compared to the same period last year.
92.1% of residents agree that, taking everything into account, they have confidence in the police. There has been a significant improvement of 5.2% points compared to the same period last year.
50.4% of residents agree that they have the ability to influence local priorities. There has been a significant improvement of 10.9% points compared to the same period last year.
85.2% of residents agree that the police are dealing with the issues that matter. There has been a significant improvement of 9.4% points compared to the same period last year.
Residents were also asked about their views on partnership working between the police and local council:
66.3% of residents agree that the police and local council are dealing with anti-social behaviour and crime. There has been a significant improvement of 7.0% points compared to the same period last year.
