It’s been a very busy five months since I arrived on the division and I’ve been on the beat, meeting divisional staff, partner agencies and the public. I’ve now started to get things moving in the direction I want them moving in and putting my stamp on the way we do business.
I said when I joined that I would shake things up and you can rest assured that criminals are not happy. We are disrupting them and putting them before the courts and they are feeling the pain. I will personally use every power and resource to make sure they are not committing crime in our area.
Your information is vital and I’d like to thank the people of Tameside for all their support and information since I took command. Also thanks to those individuals that volunteer their time to provide support to officers and the Special Constables that work with regular colleagues and walk the beat to make a difference to their own community.
Let’s continue to work together and show the rest of Greater Manchester how proud we all are of Tameside.
Have a great new year
Thank you.
Chief Superintendent Nick Adderley
Greater Manchester Police is dedicated to improving the confidence of Greater Manchester residents in the police. As a result, Neighbourhood Surveys have been conducted with local residents since April 2008. We have now moved to a face to face survey which was introduced in October 2009 and involves a rolling programme of interviews carried out between PCSOs and local residents. The survey focuses on:
• Confidence in policing
• Confidence in partnership working
• Perceptions of anti social behaviour
• Neighbourhood policing
• Local priorities
The survey is based on a random survey of people in the local area. The use of a random sample aims to ensure the results are statistically representative of the local population. The results are used to improve the service provided by the police and our partners and are updated quarterly. Care should be taken in making comparisons in local indicators that have used different survey techniques.
Greater Manchester Police has established local targets for the areas of public confidence, perception of anti social behaviour and partnership working. Performance against these targets is measured at a force level through the British Crime Survey but local progress is monitored through our Neighbourhood Surveys.
This is how residents responded during January 2011 – December 2011.
Greater Manchester residents were asked about their perception of anti social behaviour in their local area:
2.3% of residents perceive a high level of anti-social behaviour. There has been a significant improvement of 4.2% points compared to the same period last year.
7.1% of residents perceive drug use/dealing to be a very or fairly big problem. There has been a significant improvement of 6.7% points compared to the same period last year.
Greater Manchester residents were asked about public confidence:
85.9% of residents believe that the police are doing an excellent or good job. There has been a significant improvement of 6.0% points compared to the same period last year.
91.6% of residents agree that, taking everything into account, they have confidence in the police. There has been a significant improvement of 3.4% points compared to the same period last year.
51.3% of residents agree that they have the ability to influence local priorities. There has been a significant improvement of 5.8% points compared to the same period last year.
87.1% residents agree that the police are dealing with the issues that matter. There has been a significant improvement of 5.0% points compared to the same period last year.
Residents were also asked about their views on partnership working between the police and local council:
72.0% of residents agree that the police and local council are dealing with anti-social behaviour and crime. There has been a significant improvement of 3.7% points compared to the same period last year.
