Inspectors - Harpurhey
David Whelan / Tom Bowes
Welcome to the Manchester North Neighbourhood pages of the website.
Over the summer months the neighbourhood team have been engaged in several operations across the area. We saw several religious festivals including Eid and the Jewish High Holy Days take place. Unfortunately we have in the past seen a rise in crime and anti-social behaviour directed to those attending events linked to these festivals. This year we have worked with the communities and partner organisations to address such issues and offer additional support to all those in the affected areas.
In Strangeways we have increased patrols around the Green Quarter following a rise in vehicle crime. Many vehicles were targeted as a result of valuable property, such as phones and laptops being left on display. At the other side of Strangeways we have executed several warrants with the council and immigration services targeting shops selling counterfeit clothing. This isn’t the case of simply cheap clothing, but rather funds more serious and organised crime including drug dealing and supply, money laundering and human trafficking importation.
In Higher Blackley, Sgt Dave Penney has been working hard to set up a local police and crime panel. This has seen a number of active residents join officers in identifying issues and concerns that are affecting local communities and then finding solutions utilising both police and community resources. If you would be interested in joining this group please email Dave on firstname.lastname@example.org
In Harpurhey we have been working closely with partners from Manchester City Council, Factory Youth Zone and local shops and restaurants to tackle anti-social behaviour in Harpurhey shopping centre. We now have a dedicated PCSO – Angela Meah - for the shopping centre and soon you’ll be able to email any District Centre queries to ‘Ask Ange’.
In Moston, New Moston and Charlestown, we have increased our patrols through the night following an increase in burglaries where expensive cars have been stolen. We are encouraging all the residents not to leave their car keys near the front door or visible from their windows.
We are supporting the work of the Foundation 4 Peace who have been working with community members in the Moston Lane area. The local Community Action Group organised a community clean-up which was very well attended and improved the look of the area. Their next event is a Spooky Halloween Disco on 30th October at the Lightbowne Club. We now have a dedicated Policing team for Moston Lane and they are working hard to tackle issues of anti-social behaviour, particularly street drinking in the Peace Gardens. You can see the latest Moston Lane newsletter on our webpage.
We are coming up to Halloween and Bonfire Night and we will be running ‘Operation Treacle’. This will see dedicated anti-social behaviour patrols targeting firework nuisance. We will be visiting local schools and delivering a presentation to pupils regarding fireworks alongside the Fire Service. We will also be visiting all the local premises who are selling fireworks. You can report firework nuisance or ASB in the usual way by ringing 101.
