As a result of the financial situation affecting all public-sector budgets, Greater Manchester Police is considering a freeze on further police officer recruitment to take effect from January 2010. This option is one of a number of measures being discussed in detail to identify areas where savings can be made - assisting the Force to be in the best position to protect frontline resources and the service it provides to the public. A decision will be made after consultation with Greater Manchester Police Authority. A moratorium, where appropriate, is already in place on recruiting to vacant police staff posts.
