The Stretford Neighbourhood Policing Team has launched an operation to disrupt and deter criminal activity on key local public transport routes.
Launched on Friday 26 February, Operation Barrier resulted in 13 trams being checked and 71 fixed penalty notices being issued for a variety of offences on its first day of execution. Moreover, officers also conducted 60 stop and searches, 22 of which were on known offenders.
Working with Metrolink staff, a team of officers and community support officers patrolled trams and platforms at the Cornbrook, Trafford Bar, Old Trafford and Stretford stations.
Over the coming months, officers will provide further high visible patrols to improve safety and security for the thousands of passengers that travel through and use the stops.
Inspector Andrew Sutcliffe of the Stretford Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The feedback we received from passengers on the day was excellent with many telling us that they were reassured by the presence of the officers.
“We already conduct regular patrols on key bus routes across Stretford and Old Trafford so the message to the small minority of passengers who use public transport to commit crime is simple, don’t because you will be caught and brought to justice.”
