Crime prevention advice does the trick (Salford)

Residents in a part of Salford have helped reduce the number of burglaries in their neighbourhood by following crime prevention advice issued by their local police community support officer (PCSO).

Residents living in Irlam have put into practice the advice and information supplied by PCSO Mark Fitzgerald on how to keep their homes safe from burglars, resulting in fewer incidents between October 2009 and January 2010 compared to the same period in 2008 and 2009.

PCSO Fitzgerald from Salford South Neighbourhood Policing Team has helped set up Home Watch schemes, with the help of colleagues, has delivered hundreds of crime prevention letters containing tips on how to keep property safe and included messages on the electronic public display board.

Inspector Jill Gorse from Salford South Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Mark is dedicated to the area he serves and has developed a strong working relationship with the local community. A third of burglaries are down to insecurities so it is great to hear that residents are following his advice and taking the simple steps to ensure their property is secure.

“By making sure all doors and windows are locked, setting a timer light to give the impression that someone is home and setting an alarm ,you can all help keep your home safe from burglars.”
