Extra Sherry measures bring festive cheer to Bolton

Residents and party-goers in Bolton enjoyed more of a crime-free Christmas this year, as Operation Sherry slashed crime across the town centre by more than a third.

Overall, 139 fewer people fell victim to crime in December in the town centre compared to last year (a 36 per cent decrease), including 45 fewer shoplifting offences. Vehicle crime was virtually eliminated for the month, with only six offences taking place.

The December crackdown, named Operation Sherry, saw the police, Council and other agencies working closely together to ensure that people living, working and socialising in the town centre could go about their business trouble-free in the run up to Christmas.

This year, a main focus of the initiative was to promote responsible drinking through the Think Safe Drink Safe campaign. More than 1,500 bottles of water were handed out to revellers at weekends to encourage them to pace their drinks, along with the spoof Drunken Disorderly Inn leaflets, advertising Bolton’s custody suite as a hotel for those caught causing trouble.

During the daytime, activities to target vehicle crime, pickpocketing and shoplifting took place, with CCTV closely monitored and truancy sweeps carried out with Children’s Services. Police from Bolton’s Central Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out regular patrols throughout the day and night, with some officers walking an average of 10 miles each per day.

The second phase of the operation focused on Bolton’s night-time economy, with licensees in Bolton’s Pub Watch scheme supporting the Think Safe Drink Safe campaign by displaying posters and till-wobblers in their premises, with staff wearing Think Safe t-shirts.

Taxi marshalls were in place to ensure people got home quickly and safely at the end of their night out. Street Angels were also on hand to offer assistance to those that needed it and give out bottled water and Be Safe and Party leaflets.

Inspector Phil Spurgeon said: “The aim of this operation was not to spoil people’s fun while they were out enjoying themselves over Christmas, but to make sure that they could do this safely by clamping down on the minority who were out to cause trouble. Sixty-five arrests were made in total for a variety of offences.

“Officers were highly visible around the town throughout the day and night, and feedback from the public has been extremely positive, particularly in our approach to promoting more responsible drinking with those out in the pubs and clubs at weekends.

“A lot of work went into this high-profile operation, from the police, Council and other agencies, so we are pleased that this effort has paid off and crime was cut by more than a third during December.”

Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Cleaner, Greener, Safer, Councillor Sufrana Bashir-Ismail said: “The operation helped to make sure that people had a safe and fun Christmas period. I would like to congratulate everyone involved for all their hard work in making it such a success.

“The statistics and feedback show that it was well received by the public, and had a really positive effect on crime levels.”
