Police in Trafford target stolen goods market

Police are urging Trafford students to register their possessions and valuables on a national database as part of a new blitz on burglary.

Schools-based officers in Trafford will be promoting Immobilise.com, the national property database that enables police to reunite people with their valuables if they are lost or stolen and later recovered.

The initiative is one of a number of measures being undertaken as part of Operation Storm this week, which aims to bring down crime, increase the number of burglars convicted and reassure communities across the borough.

As part of the operation, officers will also continue to target known and suspected burglars through stop checks and home visits and will use a number of other tactics such as high-profile policing to reassure residents and deter offenders.

Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts of Greater Manchester Police’s Trafford Division said: “The service is free and easy to use and helps to put a dent into the stolen goods market and simplify insurance claims and police reports. Young people in particular will have many new Christmas presents so it really is important to protect them from thieves.

“Through Operation Storm we are using a wide range of tactics to home in on offenders. Burglary is a crime that can have a devastating impact on victims’ lives, and I want to assure residents that we are doing all we can to keep their homes safe.”

Other tactics residents can use to secure their valuables is to make their property less vulnerable to burglars. Simple tips include:

· Keeping doors and windows shut and locked even when you are in. One in three burglaries are down to thieves getting in through open doors and windows.
· Keep gadgets and valuables out of sight and away from windows.
· Dispose of boxes that contained valuables by taking them to the tip - leaving them outside your home is an advert to thieves of what might be inside.
· Install and use your burglar alarm every time you leave the house and when you go to bed.
· Use lights, radios and timer switches to make your house look occupied.
