Crime falls in Bury
Crime levels in Bury reduced by more than 15 per cent over the past year, according to new figures from Greater Manchester Police.
The 15 per cent drop in crime equates to 1,800 fewer victims of criminals across the borough compared to the previous year.
The statistics also reveal that the number of incidents of burglary has gone down by 18 per cent and the number of robberies has gone down by 19 per cent.
The amount of crimes solved by police in Bury has also seen an encouraging rise with around a third of burglaries and robberies successfully detected last year.
Bury Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Jon Rush said: “These figures reflect the commitment and hard work officers and staff put in to serving the people of our community who fall victim to criminals.
“The neighbourhood policing teams have also done some sterling work to build relationships with people in Bury whether it be through community sports events or giving residents a chance to talk about what matters to them at police surgeries.”
There has also been a big reduction in the amount of anti-social behaviour in the borough. In 2006 there were 14,050 incidents of anti-social behaviour in Bury, however, this year Bury Council’s Community Safety Team estimates the figure will be nearer 9,000 – a reduction of around 30 per cent.
Since 2006 there have been 1,721 incidents related to nuisance motorcycles - a reduction of 17 per cent - and 9,253 incidents related to rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour, which equates to a fall of 24 per cent.
Head of Bury Council’s Community Safety Team Tony Holt said: “Our residents are telling us that anti-social behaviour, whether it be youths drinking on the streets or graffiti, is one of the main issues affecting the quality of their lives.
“We are committed to working with our partners in Team Bury such as the police, housing association and PCT to address this problem and ensure that Bury is a safe and pleasant place to live, work and visit for everyone.”
