Police target crime on the Metrolink

Police have launched a far-reaching initiative which aims to spell the end of the line for criminals using public transport in Bury.

Officers from Bury Division have joined forces with Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) for a special operation designed to tackle fare dodgers, anti-social behaviour and criminals using the buses and Metrolink to travel into the division.

During the operation uniformed officers will join GMPTE ticket inspectors as they carry out checks on passengers to ensure they have paid for tickets.

The high-profile patrols are designed to deter people from carrying out offences such as criminal damage, theft, public order offences and assault and there will also be a strong police presence at key locations - such as Metrolink stations along the Bury Line - to prevent anti-social behaviour.

Sergeant Mark Reed of the Whitefield Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Bury town centre is a very popular destination for many people which mean the public transport networks are very busy. Unfortunately this can attract criminals or inconsiderate people who, by acting in an anti-social way, can make others feel intimidated.

“This is unacceptable. Our aim is to make visitors to Bury feel safe and during this operation we will act quickly and robustly to deal with any incidents that could affect public safety.”

The operation was paid for thanks to £10,000 worth of funding from GMPTE.

Mike Mabey, Security & Revenue Manager for Stagecoach Metrolink, said: "We are committed to providing Metrolink passengers with a safe, high quality network to travel on, as well as protecting the welfare of our employees.

“Public transport in general is extremely safe and crime is relatively low. However, we appreciate that even the fear of crime can act as a deterrent to travel. We will continue to support the police and other agencies in taking steps to make our passengers feel safe, cut crime and anti-social behaviour and help track down offenders."

Philip Purdy, GMPTE’s Metrolink Director, said: “Metrolink is a very safe way to travel, but operations like this go a long way to reassuring the travelling public.

“We’re very happy to work with Greater Manchester Police and the operator, Stagecoach Metrolink, on such initiatives because we will not tolerate criminal or antisocial behaviour on our network.”
