Older residents are being urged to close the door on cold callers after six burglaries in the last seven days across Failsworth and Shaw.
In four of the incidents, the offender has knocked on the victim’s home saying he is waiting for the neighbour to return home. Once inside the house the offender has stolen cash and fled. In these crimes the offender has been a lone male described as white, five foot, seven inches tall, around 50-years-old, medium-build with short, dark hair and scruffy appearance.
There have also been incidents of offenders posing as officials from the electric board or saying they have come to fix the fencing. In these crimes there have been two offenders, both described as white, around 30-years-old.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Reade said: “I cannot emphasise enough the importance of people checking the identity of callers to their home. If you are not expecting them, treat them with suspicion and do not let them in unless you have checked ID and are absolutely certain that they are genuine callers.
“We are currently investigating these reports and Neighbourhood Policing Teams are visiting older residents to give crime prevention advice. I also encourage the public to help us by reporting suspicious behaviour to us and people to look out for their vulnerable family members and neighbours.”

Tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of bogus callers:
· Remember to keep all external doors locked at all times, whether you are at home or not
· Stop and think before you open the door. If possible, look out of the window or use a door viewer (spy-hole) to check whether you know the caller
· If you have a door bar or chain put it on before opening the door
· Ask to see an identification card and check it carefully, but ensure you close the door on the caller while doing this
· If you have not got a door bar or chain, ask the caller to push their identity card through the letterbox, then check the photograph corresponds to the caller
· Call the company concerned to verify the identity of the caller, but do not rely on the number given to you as this may be fake. Look it up yourself in the phone book
· Do not open the door until you are happy with the caller's identity
· If you still have any doubts, ask them to call back when either a family member, friend or neighbour can be present. Genuine callers would never wish to cause distress, and would be happy to call again.
