Cyclists urged to keep tags on their bikes

Cyclists in Bury are being urged to saddle up and take advantage of a free bike security scheme.

Officers from the Bury East Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) will be marking bikes with special security paint free of charge from the mobile police station at Manchester Road Park near Bury town centre on Sunday 17 January from 10am to 3pm.

Once painted on, the unique security mark cannot be easily removed and can be used to identify the rightful owners of bikes if they’re stolen and to help convict cycle thieves.

Inspector Charlotte Cadden of the Bury East NPT said: “Bikes are a popular Christmas present but unfortunately they are also attractive to would-be thieves. People should always lock their bike to something fixed or bulky, even if it is left in a shed or garage.

“People will also have received many other new items over the Christmas period and they should consider registering them online at Immobilise.com and using a UV property marking pen.”

Immobilise.com is a free an online national database that police can access and compare registered items against property that has been found or recovered from suspected criminals so that they can be returned to their rightful owners.

The funding for the bike marking equipment came from the Bury East Local Area Partnership.

Bury East LAP Manager Kim Griffiths said: “This is a really simple technique that takes just a few minutes to complete, but can really help you keep your property safe”.

Councillor Sam Cohen, Executive Member for Safe and Secure Communities, said: “Tagging bikes can really help the police convict criminals and help keep our community safe. I would encourage anyone with a new bike to attend this event”.

To report crime, call police on 0161 872 5050, alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The Bury East NPT can be contacted on 0161 856 8127 or email buryeast.npt@gmp.police.uk.
