Police alert following spate of shovel burglaries (South Manchester)
Police in south Manchester are warning residents not to make life easy for burglars by putting away tools that may have been used to clear snow during the recent big freeze.
The warning comes after burglars used garden shovels to break into two properties in south Manchester last week.
With freezing temperatures set to hit Greater Manchester again later this month, police are urging residents to keep tools out of sight and locked away.
To combat and prevent burglary, neighbourhood officers across south Manchester will be increasing their patrols in hotspot areas at key times and will be making visits to prolific offenders. However, residents can drastically reduce their own chances of becoming a victim of crime by following simple advice.
Chief Inspector Mark Gibby said: ”It might sound obvious, but many residents will have used shovels to clear snow from their driveways, alleys or patios – always make sure you put the implement away and secure it after you’ve finished using it.
“Burglars are predatory and opportunistic. They will be aware that people will have needed to use spades to deal with the snowfall during the recent big freeze and will seek to take advantage.
“I would also like to remind you to keep all of your unattended doors and windows locked. Moreover, always make sure that your car keys are left secure and out of sight as burglars may target them through your letterbox using a hook or a cane.”
