Divisional Commander rewards excellence in south Manchester

More than 70 officers and staff from the South Manchester Division of GMP have been awarded commendations for bravery, outstanding community service and excellent conduct by the Divisional Commander.

Chief Superintendent Rob Potts awarded officers and staff with framed commendations at a recent awards ceremony, which took place at the Hough End Complex in Chorlton.

Among the recipients was PC Steven Hitchen who endured violence and threats to kill as he chased an offender over numerous alleyways and gardens before detaining and arresting him.

Detective Sergeant Lee Price received a commendation for his diligent and professional investigation following on from a violent attack on two brothers, which left one with a knife sticking out of his abdomen and the other having to have 30 stitches after being attacked with an axe. DS Price conducted a thorough and professional investigation, which led to a violent father and son being imprisoned for a total of 17 years.

PCs Sarah Jones, Mel King and Kelly Teece received a Divisional Commander’s commendation for the way that they calmly and confidently disarmed a potentially dangerous offender. The man, who was high on drugs at the time, told the officers that he was ‘looking for somebody to kill’. PC Jones, King and Teece persuaded the offender to drop a knife and successfully arrested him.

Chief Superintendent Rob Potts said: “There has been some excellent work carried out over the past year whereby officers have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety of residents in south Manchester and reduce the number people falling victim to crime.

“I would like to congratulate and thank everybody who has received an award. Because of them the streets are safer, dangerous criminals are behind bars and residents can enjoy a greater quality of life.”
