High profile policing reduces burglary

A police operation aimed at reducing burglary in Little Hulton, Walkden, Worsley, Boothstown and Ellenbrook has proved a success.

The number of burglaries taking place in December went down by 14 per cent compared to the same period in 2008.

Operation Amend involved officers patrolling the neighbourhood, identifying homes that could be vulnerable to burglars. Doors and windows were checked to see whether they were secure, if they weren’t, residents were advised of the consequences of leaving them unlocked.

Police Community Support Officers carried out extra patrols during times when burglaries were more likely to occur to deter potential offenders.

Sergeant Robert Riddell from Salford West Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The aim of the operation was to make sure residents were taking all necessary precautions to ensure their property was safe, especially around the festive period. A 14 per cent reduction means that our advice was listened to and the extra patrols put offenders off, however, we are determined to reduce that number even more.

“My advice to the community is to secure all doors and windows, even if you are staying in, set your alarm if you are going out and use a timer light to give the impression that someone is home. If you live in rented accommodation or council property and are worried about security due to poorly maintained doors and windows, please contact your landlord or local authority.

“Burglars will always look for an easy opportunity to steal personal possessions and by leaving doors and windows insecure, we are making it simple for them.“
