Motorists warned to keep thieves out in the cold

Bookmark and Share

By staying with vehicles while de-icing them on frosty mornings, motorists can dramatically reduce their chances of having their vehicle stolen. They should also always ensure that their cars are also fully locked and secured when unattended.

The warning comes following the recent freezing and snowy conditions across Greater Manchester.

Jackie Bell, crime reduction advisor for Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale Division said: “It’s a real temptation to go back inside into your warm home after turning your engine on but people often forget that it takes seconds for a thief to steal a car when the keys have been left in the ignition.

“People unfortunately don’t realise that in addition to the distress and inconvenience caused by the initial theft, insurance companies are unlikely to pay out if vehicles are stolen this way. This sadly leaves many victims in a serious financial dilemma, which is why I am urging motorists to remain vigilant against opportunist thieves and keep them out of your vehicle”

Residents are also reminded to register Christmas gifts for free on-line through the national www.immobilise.com database. The database is available to all UK police forces who use it to return lost and stolen possessions to their rightful owners.
