Police in Bury took part in a hard-hitting initiative designed to tackle anti-social and alcohol-fuelled disorder in Manchester.
On Friday 19 February 2010, Operation Portcullis, a forcewide day of action, saw 27 people arrested in Bury as warrants were executed across the division.
In addition to the arrests, police visited licensed premises to ensure licensees were not selling alcohol to under-age people. They also seized dozens of bottles of counterfeit alcohol.
Officers and staff from Bury Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team and the Drug and Alcohol Action Team carried out patrols in Bury town centre where they gave out personal safety and health advice to revellers and talked to people about any concerns they may have.
As part of the day of action, officers from Neighbourhood Policing Teams in Radcliffe, Whitefield and Prestwich carried out special patrols designed to prevent and disrupt anti-social behaviour on the streets.
Head of Bury’s Intelligence Unit Inspector Dave McElroy said: “We are fortunate to have a vibrant nighttime economy in Bury and we want people to visit and enjoy themselves, but at the same time ensure they do not come to any harm.
“People should avoid drinking to excess, stay with groups of friends and always arrange how to get home safely by avoiding travelling alone and using a licensed taxi or designating a group member as a driver.
“This successful operation is also a reminder to revellers that although we want people to be able to enjoy themselves we will not tolerate bad behaviour and will act robustly if necessary.”
Councillor Sam Cohen, Executive Member for Safe and Secure Communities, said: "This police operation helped target some key individuals and issues which create problems for Bury. It is great to see council and police officers working side by side to tackle these problems and ensure our residents stay safe".
People can help police by providing information on crime and criminal activity either by calling them directly on 0161 872 5050 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Crimestoppers is an independent charity that will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.
