Operation sees crime reduced in Cheadle and Gatley

Bobbies on the beat have helped to dramatically reduce burglary and robbery in Cheadle and Gatley.

Between 16 November and 12 January 2010 there was a 67 per cent decrease in burglary and a 75 per cent reduction in robbery, when compared to the same period the previous year. Operation Beach was launched in this period, as it is a time when traditionally burglary increases.

As part of the operation, approximately 1,800 residents were visited and offered crime reduction advice and a free home security assessment. The mobile police station was located in the heart of the community to provide a base for officers to work from.

Officers patrolled small zones at night on bikes and on foot, stopping and checking the details of anybody acting suspiciously. Suspected offenders were targeted and the friends and family of known offenders were visited.

Sergeant Darren Spurgeon, from the Stockport West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Clearly the high profile nature of the operation deterred any would be offenders. Members of the public and police officers, who live in the area, commented on how pleased they were to see such an increased presence on the streets – especially during the dark nights.

“We will expand on this operation by moving the areas we target but the public can support us by and joining Neighbourhood Watch and making sure they are not an easy target for thieves. They should lock their doors and windows, use a light timer and put an alarm on if they are going out. When they are out the should make sure they keep any valuables hidden and away from view.”
