Eight arrested after drugs raids.

Eight people have been arrested as part of an operation to target the supply of illegal drugs in Tameside.

These raids are the result of an intelligence led operation, code named Operation Donnington, aimed at people who distribute drugs.

Warrants were executed at 10 addresses in Ashton, Hyde and Werneth in Oldham this morning, Thursday 4 March 2010

Just after 6am about 70 officers executed the warrants at the various addresses.

One woman and seven have been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences including supplying class A drugs and conspiracy to supply class A drugs.

Superintendent John Berry said: "Today's action is a direct result of residents telling us about a problem in their community and our officers acting on that information, with the aim of removing the blight of drugs from their streets.

"We always thoroughly investigate such reports, gather evidence and take positive action and I hope that today will encourage other people to contact us with information directly or via Crimestoppers.

"It must be frustrating for residents when have the courage to contact us and then don't see immediate changes, but I am grateful to the community for their patience because it has allowed us to do important work in the run-up to today.

"Our efforts to target those who deal drugs and bring misery to their neighbours do not stop here.

"The majority of people don't want drugs in their community.

"We will always try to tackle drug dealers as they cause misery on a number of levels - to those using drugs, to the community that has to put up with the anti-social behaviour and intimidation that goes with it and those who suffer the burglaries and robberies that fund addictions."

Anyone who is concerned about drug dealing in their area should ring Greater Manchester Police on 0161 872 5050 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
