Off-licences pass the test (Stockport)

Police in Stockport had a successful night when they carried out a covert operation to check whether off-licences would sell alcohol to young people.

Twelve off-licences were randomly selected to be part of the test purchasing operation and only one sold the alcohol. The seller was issued with a £80 fixed penalty notice.

The operation was launched to target residents’ concerns on anti-social behaviour and youths causing annoyance.

Licensing Officer Police Constable Philip Gurton said: “The night was successful in the fact that only one premises sold the alcohol illegally. We have been acting on residents concerns and working closely with off-licenses to remind them of their responsibilities when selling alcohol and the penalties they face for selling to anybody under 18. From the results it is clear to see they have been listening.

“Operations like this will continue to take place to put a stop to crime and disorder that takes place as a result of youngsters drinking alcohol on the streets.”
