Shop a burglar in Oldham this weekend (Oldham)

Police will be asking supermarket visitors across Oldham to share information on burglaries or other suspicious activity with them this weekend (Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 January).

Over the weekend, officers will be based at the entrances of eight major supermarkets to give residents information on how to provide police with the vital information they need to bring criminals to justice. They will also be giving advice on how people can keep themselves and their property safe from thieves and encouraging shoppers to register their valuables on www.immobilise.com, a free database that all UK police forces use to identify the ownership of recovered items.

The activity is part of a New Year blitz on burglars to bring down crime, increase the number of burglars convicted and reassure communities.

Police will also be targeting suspected and known offenders through stop checks and home visits, and using high profile policing to reassure residents and deter offenders.

Chief Inspector Rob Tinsley said: “Burglars continue to be our number one target for 2010 and we are calling on the public to help us in this fight by providing us with information that can help us bring criminals to justice.

“Information on the activities, residences, movements and associates of criminals is a precious commodity in our fight to catch those committing crime and bring them to justice.

“There are many people out there holding this information that could mean the difference between us putting a burglar behind bars or leaving them free to continue to target our communities and hurt innocent people.

“We are asking them to share that information with us directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers and help us to bang up burglars and make our communities safer.”
Information that will help police to target burglars and build up evidence that will lead to convictions include names, addresses and telephone numbers as well as descriptions of the suspects such as height, build, colouring and clothing. Information like makes, models, colours and registration numbers of the vehicles used by suspects can also prove useful.
