Bury burglars get caught in a Storm
A Greater Manchester Police crackdown on burglary saw 75 people arrested in Bury last week (18 to 24 January).
Officers from Bury Division joined Operation Storm, a Forcewide initiative to tackle burglary across Greater Manchester aimed at targeting criminals and increasing public awareness of how they can protect themselves from would-be thieves.
These tactics included carrying out nine search warrants at the addresses of known or suspected offenders and visiting the homes of many of the division’s target offenders.
As part of the operation search warrants were executed on suspected cannabis farms which resulted in the seizure of 53 cannabis plants. Two cannabis street warnings were issued to individuals after they were stopped and searched by officers.
During the week, officers conducted high-profile patrols across the division during which they identified houses which were potentially vulnerable to burglars and gave the occupants advice on how to make their homes more secure.
The week of action was organised under GMP’s Operation Storm initiative, which was launched in June last year and aims to drive down burglaries and increase burglary convictions. This year to date, there have been 195 fewer domestic burglaries in Bury than over the same period in 2008/9, a reduction of 20 per cent.
Detective Chief Inspector Emily Higham from Bury Division said: “To see the arrest of so many key offenders is a great result but to have this supported by such a drop in our burglary figures is a real example of how the hard work that all of our teams have put in, is paying off.
“The public can be assured that we will be keeping the pressure on over the coming weeks to ensure we continue to drive down this despicable crime that can leave victims frightened to be in their own homes, somewhere they should feel totally safe.
“They can help by keeping all doors and windows locked, ensuring alarm and timer lights are switched on should they go out. I encourage the community to continue to provide us either directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers the information we need to keep on banging up burglars.”
Public reassurance was a major part of the operation, and neighbourhood officers took the mobile police station to locations across the borough where they offered the public crime prevention tips and helped people register their valuables on Immobilise.com - a national database that police can access and compare items that have been found or recovered from suspected criminals.
On Thursday, police also joined trading standards, Environmental Health and Bury Council’s housing benefit fraud team for an operation targeting rogue traders travelling into Bury.
