Community and Police stick together to tackle anti-social behaviour

Members of the community came out with ‘Force’ over the weekend to see how police are tackling anti-social behaviour.

Over 200 residents joined 550 police officers, PCSOs and Special Constables as they stepped up patrols as part of Treacle, a partnership initiative between GMP, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Health and Safety Executive, the 10 local authorities, GMPTE and Chambers of Commerce.

Treacle aims to highlight the dangers and possible consequences of anti-social behaviour, including the misuse of fireworks, around Halloween and bonfire night.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said: “It was really great to see so many members of the public taking part and working with us to tackle anti-social behaviour. It is vital that we continue to work hand in hand with residents and the local authorities to ensure Greater Manchester continues to be a safe place to live and work.

“We have had some fantastic feedback from the public. For example, in Chadderton one resident described it as a privilege to have been invited to join neighbourhood officers on patrol and see what they are doing to tackle anti-social behaviour.”

Action led to:
· 28 arrests
· Seizure of fireworks and alcohol, including £6,000 fireworks on the Metropolitan division.
· In Salford, 15 seized vehicles were crushed as part of an operation to tackle the nuisance of illegal off-road biking,
· In Wigan, more than 300 young people got involved in sporting activities organised by the police and the council.

Over 120 partner agency representatives, including housing associations, trading standards and youth services, also joined police on patrol.

Chief Superintendent Jon Rush added: “The work we’re doing with local residents and our partners, including Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the other local authorities, is making a difference and having a positive impact on our communities.

“These efforts will carry on this week, especially in the run-up to bonfire night on Thursday, and we encourage residents continued support.”
