Neighbourhood action cleans up Bury East

Police officers have been working alongside street cleaners, fire officers and local volunteers as part of a scheme to dramatically improve the lives of people in East Bury.

Officers from the Bury East Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) are joining representatives from the Team Bury partnership - which includes Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Bury Council, Six Town Housing, Environmental Services - for a special neighbourhood action week in the East Street area of East Bury.

The scheme is taking place between Monday 8 February and Friday 12 February and is designed to prevent and disrupt criminal activity and rid the streets of unsightly graffiti and hazardous litter.

Throughout the week police officers are giving out crime prevention packs to residents and fire officers are carrying out home safety checks while, on Tuesday, members of Asian Women’s Centre on South Cross Street joined NPT officers for a special litter-pick.

The Benefits Agency held a special drop-in advice clinic at the Mosses Centre.

Inspector Charlotte Cadden of the Bury East NPT said: “We have had some fantastic feedback from local residents about the initiative which is an excellent example of the positive results that can be achieved through good partnership working. I am sure the activity undertaken in the area will have a beneficial impact on the quality of residents’, businesses’ and visitors lives.

“We are confident that we can maintain this positive start and continue to prevent, detect and disrupt criminal activity, improve the local environment, offer public reassurance and further develop community pride in East Bury.”

Councillor Sam Cohen Executive Member for Safe and Secure Communities said: "According to recent statistics, the most important things that make people feel that an area is a good place to live are low levels of crime and clean streets. This is why we are dedicating such a high level of resource into these areas. It is really important to us that we keep Bury a safe place to live."
