2006/2007 Diversity Monitoring Data
GMP has previously published an Annual Report containing diversity monitoring information for the previous financial year. However, consultation with the public and with the Strategic Independent Advisory Groups (IAGs) has resulted in a change to the mode of publication of this data. This is to improve accessibility to the large quantity of monitoring data, as well as provide more explanation of the way in which GMP uses its powers, together with positive examples of the work being undertaken to promote equality and diversity.
The previous reporting format will be replaced by two alternative publications. Detailed data tables, together with some explanation, will be published here, on the GMP website. Additionally, a short report will be produced in print (as well as on the website) that will include information about the steps that GMP has taken to address diversity and provide a better service to all of its communities. Articles will include:
This shift in approach will enable the Force to respond to public interest in its performance in a way that is designed to address community concerns and raise confidence. By monitoring which aspects of data are accessed and how frequently, GMP can better understand which issues are of greatest concern to our communities, and improve the type of information we publish to better meet public demand.
Alongside the development of the report containing contextual stories relating to diversity, GMP will further develop its website to provide regularly updated information on progress relating to diversity and equality. Consideration will also be given to providing some of this information in an ‘easy read’ format.
DIVERSITY MONITORING DATA 2006/7
A summary of findings can be accessed through the links below. The individual summaries for each topic contain more detail for those data sets that have a particular impact on community confidence.
GMP scrutinises its diversity monitoring data on a monthly basis through its established performance management processes, and action is taken at the time to address any issues by the appropriate business area in partnership with Diversity Command. For the purposes of this report, the actions that Force has taken in relation to both stop and account/search and hate crime are highlighted, in recognition of the particular interest of the Police Authority and the public in these areas, which impact so significantly on community confidence.
It should be noted that the Force is currently reviewing diversity monitoring categories to include information relating to all of the six strands of diversity (age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation). This is being undertaken in consultation with our Staff Associations and Strategic Independent Advisory Groups, with a view to ensuring that we are able to effectively measure how we deliver services and employment to all of our various diverse communities. Therefore, the monitored data at this stage relates mainly to ethnicity, with gender and age also featuring on occasions.
To assist in the interpretation of the data, you will also find attached an explanation of ethnicity classification and details of the estimated population of Greater Manchester and all GMP divisions (mid-2006 estimate).
