Residents urged to take action against burglary

Older residents in Oldham are being urged to come along to a roadshow to pick up tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of doorstep criminals.

The Action Against Burglary Roadshow is hosted by Age Concern Oldham and takes place at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Wednesday 17 February between 11am and 3pm.

Neighbourhood Policing officers and Trading Standards will all be on hand, along with representatives from Oldham Community Leisure, Community Safety Services, and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

Maggie Hurley, Community & Volunteer Co-ordinator, Age Concern Oldham, said: “Distraction burglary is a heartless crime which can have a devastating impact on older people, both emotionally and financially. Simple actions such as using the door chain or having adequate locks fitted on doors and windows can give older people an edge against burglars and bogus callers.”

Chief Inspector Sarah Jones said: “Through this event we hope to pass on simple tips to help residents keep themselves safe. It’s also a chance for them to get to know their officers and be confident that they can come to us for help and advice whenever they need it.

“By working closely with members of the public we are determined to stop this type of crime and are advising people to Lock, Stop, Chain and Check before they let anybody they do not know into their home. It’s simple – if in doubt, keep them out.”

To reserve a place at this event please contact Maggie Hurley at Age Concern Oldham on 0161 621 6102. The event is free and lunch will be provided but spaces are limited.
